Sharks & Minnows
Dribble across the field without getting your ball stolen by a shark.
-
Set up a large playing field with boundaries
Choose 2-3 players to be sharks and give them pinnies to wear
-
Balls
Disc cones
Pinnies
-
Minnows to dribble across the field with their ball with out the Sharks stealing it.
-
Minnows start at one end line and have to dribble to the opposite side without their ball being stolen or going out of bounds.
If players lose their ball they perform 5 reps of foot skills (dancing on the ball or sweet spot taps) before rejoining.
**Begin without a ball - minnows have pinnies tucked into shorts - sharks must grab the pinnies
-
Alter # of sharks and minnows based on how many players are at practice.
Instead of doing foot skills, have players become sharks if they lose their ball.
-
Dancing on the Ball (alternate feet to tap the top of the ball)
Sweet Spots (move the ball with the inside of the foot, alternating feet and keeping the ball in between)
Encourage players to have a positive mindset
Coach players to take advantage of open spaces
Week 2, Day 2
Reflection: Self-Awareness
1. What is Self-Awareness?
Naming our feelings, a selfie of how we feel inside
2. What different feelings did you feel today in school or during the game?
3. What can you do if you get frustrated when your ball is stolen?
Take a deep breath
Have patience with yourself-you're still learning
Ask your teammate how he did it so you can learn
Week 3, Day 1
Reflection: Self-Management
1. Last week we talked about naming our feelings and working on our Self-Awareness. This week we are going to build on that and work on our Self-Management. What do you think Self-Management means?
-Manage yourself, this means recognizing your feelings and then choosing the best way to act
2. When you were playing Sharks and Minnows what feelings did you feel during the game?
-look for students that may be frustrated and highlight how they could handle their feelings
3. If you got frustrated when you were tagged, how did you manage those feelings? What did you do to keep playing?
