Ships and Sailors
Very active “Simon Says” with a Nautical Theme and specific motions.
-
Set up a square of cones 30x20 feet
Students start in middle space between cones
-
Disc cones
-
Players complete the coach's command without doing the wrong action.
-
Coach explains different commands:
"Captain’s coming"- students stand still, saluting, can't move until the coach says "at ease."
"Ships"- students run to one line of cones
"Sailors"- students run to the other line of cones
“Hit the deck"- students drop to the ground lying flat
Students who do the wrong task can be out or do jumping jacks.
-
Challenge: add additional commands:
"Rowing"- students form groups of 3, sitting in a line, pretending to row a boat
"Eating"- students form groups of 4, sitting in a circle, pretending to eat
Have students make up additional commands
-
Encourage captains to participate!
Recognize when students are being creative with how they act commands out
Week 9, Day 1
Reflection: Relationship Skills
This week we are continuing to build on our Relationship Skills and we will be working on solving problems.
1. How are friendships like flowers?
-sometimes there is rain and sometimes there is sun, they grow, they need food/care to grow
2. What do you like about friendships?
3. What can be hard?
In order to build our team spirit and feel supported the Captains will be changing our Call and Response for the last 2 weeks.
* Encourage captains to come up with a call and response where they can yell it during games and the team will respond
For example: Call: Team Response: Work or Call: We Grow Response: Together
Week 10, Day 2
Reflection: Responsible Decision Making
This week we are talking about Responsible Decision Making and I encouraged you to Stop, Think, and then Act.
Stop-take a breath, Think-how am I feeling and why, Act-what is a positive choice I can make
1. Did anyone try this today at school or during the game?
2. Sometimes we have to make decisions quickly. How did it feel to have to make a decision quickly in our game?
3. When else do you have to make quick decisions during your day? Do you still have time to stop and think?
