Defending- Week 5 | Day 1

Definition

Defending is when a player from the team without the ball tries to protect their goal from the attacking team.

Skill

Split, Step, Stop: a way to stop the person with the ball from getting past you.

Split: have your legs in a wide stance, shoulder length apart

Step: step to one side of the person you want to steal the ball from

Stop: hold that position and follow the person with the ball until you can steal it or they dribble out of bounds

Coaching Points

  1. Get pressure on the ball- sprint to player and plan your feet

  2. Angle your body so you can shuffle and you don’t have to cross over your legs

  3. Be on your toes so you can move quickly

Advanced

Ball side, Goal side: stand between the ball and the goal, deny space for the attacker to push them out of bounds.
