Definition

Defending is when a player from the team without the ball tries to protect their goal from the attacking team.

Skill

Poke- A poke is used by a defender when an opponent has possession of the ball. A defender uses their foot to “poke” the ball away from an attacker dribbling the ball.

Coaching Points

1. Use your toes to poke the ball

2. Emphasize that this is a rare time where we can use our toes

Advanced

Block: using the sweet spot of your foot to steal the ball from an attacker.

  • While doing split, step, stop and the ball is far enough off the attacker’s foot, reach in with the sweet spot of one of your feet to steal the ball
